Everyone who attended the fourth grade Mississippi program knew more about the Magnolia State once they exited the Performing Arts Center Friday morning. The annual program highlights well known and lesser known Mississippi facts through songs and skits.
Grace Simmons finds purpose in influencing her students to embrace imagination and improvement, making her excited to come to work as a fifth grade teacher at Jackson Academy. “I love JA,” she said. “It’s a very nurturing environment for students, and the faculty is so close. Jackson Academy is exceptional.”
Chris Tucker, a veteran teacher at Jackson Academy with 35 years of service, believes teaching more than the subject matter is part of his role. He calls it “developing confidence in their competence.”
The Clarion-Ledger announced Sunday that Jackson Academy was named Best Private School in its poll in which Mississippians vote for their most admired businesses, organizations, people, and events. In two other categories, voters named Sandra McKay Best Teacher and the JA Carnival Best Festival.
This announcement comes just weeks after the Mississippi Business Journal named JA the Best Private School in its annual poll.
Grandparents didn’t mind returning to school one bit, as long as they got to sit beside their grandchildren in class. Over 200 grandparents, relatives, and special friends braved a bit of stormy weather to attend JA’s first Upper School Grandparents Day Friday.

Ranked No. 1 in Mississippi among public and private schools by Maxpreps, Jackson Academy’s volleyball team captured the state crown and finished with a 43-3 record, undefeated among MAIS schools. Three Jackson Academy students have been selected to serve in youth leadership and junior diplomat roles through the Madison County Business League & Foundation Youth Leadership Class and the Ridgeland Chamber of Commerce Junior Diplomat Program.
