The Jackson Academy community celebrated two athletic signings within the past week. On Wednesday, February 3, Donovan Veasley signed to play football with Holmes Community College. This morning, Brendan Gibson signed to play football with Belhaven University. Both athletes have demonstrated great tenacity in the pursuit of their sport, overcoming injuries during high school to continue their athletic careers in college.
The Jackson Academy baseball team has two professional baseball players in its midst. According to Head Baseball Coach Parker Harris, team members are soaking up all they can from this experience.
Congratulations to McKinna Smith, who signed with Northwest Community College’s Rangers women’s basketball team in a ceremony held last Wednesday morning in the Jackson Academy Learning Commons. McKinna has played varsity basketball since ninth grade, starting her career at Copiah Academy. She transferred to Jackson Academy at the beginning of her senior year.
Jackson Academy’s fall athletes played exciting and rewarding seasons this semester, and celebrated together as circumstances allowed. Players and fans alike overcame the challenges of playing and supporting sports during the COVID-19 pandemic. This week, we recognize the varsity football team, the cheer and dance teams, the softball team, and the varsity and junior varsity girls soccer teams. Congratulations to each student athlete and team on their accomplishments!

Players and fans alike overcame the challenges of playing and supporting sports during the COVID-19 pandemic. We want to recognize our students’ accomplishments. This week, we recognize the junior high football teams, the cross country teams, and the volleyball teams. Congratulations to each student athlete on their accomplishments! We look forward to recognizing our remaining fall athletes next week.
Two JA seniors made their official commitments to D-1 universities on Wednesday. Parker Bracken signed to play beach volleyball at Louisiana State University and Jackson Conn committed to Mississippi State University’s baseball program. They were joined at the event by members of their families, coaches, members of their teams, and classmates.
Jackson Academy hosted a signing Monday at 10 a.m. for two seniors who are continuing their athletic careers in college baseball next year. Parker Ryan signed with Pearl River Community College and Branson Tadlock signed with Jones County Junior College. Parker and Branson were joined at the event by members of their families, coaches, members of the baseball team, and classmates.
Each year WAPT TV 16 and Bank Plus team up to recognize high school athletes who are excellent scholars. Jackson Academy’s recipient for 2020-21 is senior Drew Antici of Madison. WAPT produces a video about each student and holds a banquet honoring the recipients in the spring.
JA cheerleaders, dance teams, and drumline demonstrated their skills at inspiring audiences during the MAIS Spirit Competition held at the Mississippi Coliseum yesterday. The newest addition to spirit competition is a drumline show, this year held as an exhibition. JA’s drumline delivered a lively, crowd-pleasing performance. JA spirit teams brought home four championship titles, three runner up positions, and two All-Star recognitions. Congratulations to all of JA’s spirit teams!
