Jackson Academy is pleased to announce the first quarter Honor Roll and Academy Honor Roll for the 2020-2021 academic year.
Middle School Combines Halloween and Giving
Just prior to Halloween, seventh and eighth grade students divided into groups by their birthday months and visited outdoor areas on campus designated for trick or treating. Ninth and tenth grade students raised money for Student Council Christmas projects by braving entry into a Haunted House Thursday evening.
Sixth Grade Scientists Explore Space
The universe will tell our sixth graders some of its secrets this month as they complete a project devised by teacher Katie Chustz. To complement their McGraw Hill Inspire Science Earth and Space curriculum, students will use the Sky Walk application to track moon phases for 29 days. Tomorrow they will begin this month-long study, just in time for Saturday night’s blue moon.
ARC Facilitators Bring Specialized Skills
Colleen Jones and Lynda Morse are new to Jackson Academy this year, but not new to success with differentiated learning. Each brings a special set of skills to JA as our school’s newest Academic Resource Center facilitators.
Investigator Educates Middle School Students on Internet Safety
Middle School students gathered in the PAC yesterday morning to hear a presentation from guest speaker Jay Houston on online safety and cybercrime. Houston is a certified forensic computer examiner and commands the Internet Crimes Against Children unit within the Attorney General’s office of cybercrime division. He has served as an investigator for 13 years with the ICAC unit, and uses his experiences in the field to inform and encourage students.
Encore and Showtime Overcome Obstacles on the Path to Competition
Normally, choreographers Kevin Chase and Nick Quamme spend a week at JA teaching Encore and Showtime the dances for their upcoming competition season. But 2020 isn’t a typical year. Instead of visiting Jackson, Chase and Quamme taught choreography via Zoom from their studios in Iowa and Wisconsin as students watched from the Performing Arts Center’s choral music room.
Middle School Classrooms Observe Patriot Day
Last Friday, organizations and individuals throughout our nation paused to commemorate those who lost their lives in the devastating terrorist attacks of 2001. Current JA students were born into a world continuing to wrestle with the wake of the attacks, and have never waited at the gate to see a loved one off on a flight. We visited three Middle School classrooms to see different ways of observing Patriot Day.
Sixth Graders Create Infographics on the Dangers of Binge-Watching
What is an infographic? According to Dictionary.com, an infographic is “a visual image, such as a chart or diagram used to represent information or data.” Students in sixth grade literature recently read an article published in Scholastic Scope magazine titled The Truth About Binge-Watching. After reading the article, the students created infographics communicating what they learned about binge-watching.
