Valentine’s Day started early and went big at Jackson Academy. Families arrived in the carpool line Thursday morning to find a cast of candy hearts, Alice in Wonderland characters, and even cupid welcoming them to campus with gifts of candy roses and other sweets. The event warmed everyone’s hearts and brightened the cloudy day with the love our teachers and staff members have for our students.
Not a day goes by that students are not impacted by gifts to the Annual Fund given by parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, and friends. With approximately 88 percent of the school’s operating budget designated for teacher salaries and benefits, additional sources of income is necessary to continue our mission of building a better JA for our students, faculty, and staff.
Each year at JA, kindergarteners and seniors are matched with one another to form a mentoring relationship through the Alpha and Omega program. Their connection is evident when they see each other, often greeting one another with a big hug. Throughout the year they do many activities together. At times they have played basketball together and enjoyed picnics on the football field, but this month things got a bit more meaningful.
Jackson Academy baseball players are using former Tulane University Head Coach Joe Brockhoff’s Super 8 Hitting System that employs video analysis to hone their batting this year. And, they are going to test out their swings during games scheduled at Trustmark Park February 13 and 18.
Through visual and performing arts, students develop critical life skills, including poise, self-confidence, focus, and a positive work ethic. The Jackson Academy Arts Guild (JAAG) is the booster club for the Arts.
Four is one of the world’s favorite numbers. So, when you pair four year olds and fourth graders, special friendships are bound to happen. The kickoff of Jackson Academy’s 4-4 Buddy Program was celebrated this morning. Fourth graders visited K4 classrooms and read a favorite book to their K4 buddy.
JA creative writing students came away with recognition for their work in the 2020 Mississippi Scholastic Writing Awards again this year.
Third grade teacher Harriett Eppes received a call last week letting her know she had been selected as a winner in the People category in Jackson Free Press Best of Jackson awards. She was named Best Teacher for 2020 by the publication.

In Cassie Alston’s literature class, seventh grade students have been studying ancient Greek and Roman mythology. The Western world has origins in ancient Greece, with allusions to ancient Greece’s deities and heroes abounding in modern literature.
