A faculty member and two seniors recently participated in a professional vocal project that used skills taught at JA. Director of Performing Arts Kerri Sanders and students Boston Hollingsworth and Sydney Thaxton served as voice talent for an audiobook project released on Audible in November.
Around the beginning of November, senior Hiser Funderburg went to Head of Upper School Brandi Richardson’s office. The senior proposed the idea of allowing Upper School males to grow out their facial hair. Richardson talked with Hiser about how there should be a purpose or something of substance to go along with it.
The Clarion-Ledger announced Sunday that Jackson Academy was named Best Private School in its poll in which Mississippians vote for their most admired businesses, organizations, people, and events. In three other categories, voters named JA the Best Place to Work, the Performing Arts Center the Best Live Music/Concert Venue, and the JA Carnival Best Festival/Fair.
The Student Government Association hosted a Leadership Luncheon at JA, inviting student government executive boards from surrounding independent schools and universities. Student leaders from Hartfield Academy, Jackson Prep, Madison-Ridgeland Academy, Mississippi College, Mississippi State, and The University of Mississippi attended.
“Got a problem? We are here to help you solve it.” The Math Lab’s slogan is much more than a play on words. Students bring actual math problems to the lab. They work with teachers to increase their understanding, overcome limits and anxiety, and even push for higher achievement. With Math Lab, students improve grades and build confidence.
Modeled after a college writing center, the Jackson Academy Writing Center is available daily for all ninth through twelfth-grade students during seventh period. The goal of the Writing Center is to encourage students to utilize built-in academic support to refine their writing before college.
Last week, JA celebrated the heroes of the United States who have served in the military, both past and present. At the Lower School Patriotic Day on November 9, honored guests from the Armed Forces were invited to stand while the song that represented their branch of service played. Students presented the flags of the Armed Forces during the recognition.
The Mississippi Health Care Foundation helps bridge the gap between the quality of care provided in nursing home facilities and those special emotional and physical needs not covered by insurance, Medicare, Medicaid or even family members.
The inaugural junior high Scholars’ Bowl team competed in the MAIS State tournament on Wednesday, November 1. The Raiders finished seventh place overall. The Scholars’ Bowl team is composed of sixth and seventh grade students and coached by Brandon Richardson.
Showtime and Encore competed Friday morning, November 3, at Riverland Choral Festival in Pearl. This was the first competition of the groups’ regular season, which officially kicks off in January. Both show choirs received superior ratings at the festival.
