Lower School Resources
In the 1950s, teacher Loyal Bearss changed education in the Jackson area by instructing children to read using a method that was uncommon at the time—phonics.
Bearss and 10 families took a chance on phonics and formed Jackson Academy. JA’s progressive methods soon had students reading well beyond their grade level. That passion for reading continues to characterize students’ experience at JA, as opening a book is often the first step on a life-long journey.
The Jackson Academy Lower School Library has a collection of 12,502 books and is open from 7:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. each day. All students in grades first through fourth have a scheduled library period for forty minutes each week.
Wherever they are, our students have access to the resources that keep them connected to literary materials ranging from digital books, read-aloud books on video, to audiobooks available through the MISBO digital library.
