JA Competes at Mu Alpha Theta Math Tournament

Congratulations to the Jackson Academy students who placed third overall in the Mu Alpha Theta math competition last week! The Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science has hosted the event for more than 20 years to give students from across the state the opportunity to engage in a competitive math tournament. Thirty JA students from grades eight through twelve traveled to compete against 27 other teams from across the state.

Students began the day with a written test with topics including algebra 1, geometry, algebra 2, trigonometry/precalculus and calculus. They next took a ciphering test in one of several categories, such as geometry or calculus. In the final round of competition, students were divided into an interschool team and a potpourri team. JA students and teams placed in the following categories:

Algebra 1:

5th place individual – Gautam Ray
4th place team
6th place ciphering

Geometry:

8th place individual – Elizabeth Copeland
5th place team
4th place ciphering

Algebra 2:

6th place individual – Gibson Cheney
4th place team
2nd place ciphering

Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry:

3rd place individual – Priya Ray
8th place individual – Emma Collums
3rd place team
2nd place ciphering

Calculus:

7th place individual – Miles Johnson
5th place team
3rd place ciphering

Interschool:

8th place team – Reese Anderson, Bailey Berry, Gibson Cheney, Emma Collums, Carter Elliott, Courtney Francois, Anna Katherine Ray, Priya Ray, Alex Rushing
