A JA Tradition

Each weekend throughout the year in K4 and kindergarten, the most well-behaved student of the week in the class gets to take the class mascot home. Last week in Courtney Denton’s Birds class, these students had the opportunity to bring “Birdie” home for the weekend to tag along on all of their adventures.

As the weekend concludes, a parent emails the teacher photos of the mascot’s adventures. The following week, the child stands before the class to tell about their weekend adventures. Students are encouraged to ask questions and have pertinent conversations within the group.

Each student’s confidence grows throughout the year with the presentations to the class about their weekends. “Sharing and telling about the experiences enriches language skills as well,” said K4 teacher Courtney Denton. “Our mascots have been all over the country on airplanes, boats, tractors, cars, trucks, trains, bikes, and golf carts.” Denton says she thinks the mascots have all been to Disney World at least once! They also frequently travel to the mountains and the beach.
