Students On the Move!

February 4, 2025 / Lower School/All News

When the closing school day bell rings, students are ready to expend some energy. Jackson Academy is a proponent of the importance of exercise. The school facilitates opportunities for students of all ages to develop lifelong healthy habits.

Physical education teachers resumed Running Club for this semester on Wednesday. In this after-school activity for third through fifth graders, students run laps on the track at The Brickyard. Parent volunteers and P.E. teachers record students’ progress as the youngsters work toward Running Club milestones, such as the 100-Mile Club, receiving recognition at the end of the year. JA hopes that students develop lifelong exercise habits through Running Club, whether or not they choose to participate in organized sports.

Another place where students expend energy is in JA’s After School program, which provides supervised care for students following the school day. Frequently, After School students enjoy the Lower School playground, an expansive green space with basketball goals, swings, climbing equipment, and plenty of room to run; on other days, they participate in classes in their areas of interest, such as music, tennis, computer, and other choices. Learn more about JA’s After School program here.

JA facilitates extensive opportunities for students to develop healthy exercise habits through sports and spirit teams. Students participate in sports programming beginning in the fifth grade with activities such as football, cheer, basketball, and swimming. Students can join the equestrian team as early as fourth grade. Also, coaches offer clinics, camps, and intramural opportunities for younger grades. For instance, the volleyball program offered intramurals for first through sixth grades last year, and the baseball coaches will offer a camp this spring. Beginning with sixth grade, students are eligible for JV and varsity teams. For more information on JV and varsity teams, visit GoRaiders.org.

With a practice field, The Brickyard outdoor stadium, two gymnasiums, and the Raider Park complex (with baseball, softball, tennis, and track), JA students can experience a variety of school sports. JA is currently conducting a feasibility study in which the school will consider adding additional spaces to meet the needs of our growing and active student body.
