On Thursday during school, Jackson Academy kindergarten students received a unique pair of colorful, crazy socks. Once the students had the socks on, they were ready for an adventure.
Their adventure was one of many “firsts” for JA kindergartners. Thursday’s “first” was extra special because their task was to find their Alpha and Omega buddies by matching the socks they were wearing to those worn by a senior at JA’s amphitheater. This was the way their buddy was revealed.
Each year JA matches kindergartners and seniors to form a mentoring relationship between the pair. Throughout the year, they do many activities together. Their connection is evident when they see each other, often greeting one another with a big hug. At times they have played basketball together, read books, and enjoyed picnics on the football field.
JA kindergartners have the opportunity to engage with students older than they are, which provides priceless self-confidence and many fun memories. Meanwhile, the seniors remember their experiences from their younger years and see the proof that they’ve grown into young men and women ready for the next chapter of their lives. Many members of Alpha and Omega remain in touch even after their years at JA have concluded.
