Physics Class Wins

March 22, 2022 / Upper School/All News

Stancie Ley’s sixth-period physics class is now full of award-winning students. Back in October, as part of the physics curriculum, Ley’s class created a Rube Goldberg machine. As a team, they used their physics knowledge of energy, momentum, and trajectory to design to create the working machine.

They spent four class days perfecting the machine and creating and editing a video to show the whole process. With Ley supervising, the team members created a fun series of chain reactions that led the machine to pop a balloon. Students learned about collaboration, perseverance, and real-world application through this project.

In March of 2022, Ley chose to enter her students’ project into a competition hosted by Raytheon Intelligence and Space. This competition is held yearly for Mississippi schools and is judged by 60 Raytheon engineers. Ley’s sixth-period class placed third overall after meeting specific weighted criteria. Congratulations to the 13 students in Mrs. Ley’s sixth-period physics class: Trey Adams, Nick Barone, Andrew Burks, Kristian Clark, Hudson Hadley, Michael Hederman, Patton Kincaid, Jenna Lancon, Aidan Rich, Lani Roberts, Kris Robinson, Garrett Smith, and Devlyn Williams.
