First Graders Keep Connection Alive with College Buddies

The bonds formed through Jackson Academy’s Alpha and Omega buddy program don’t end at graduation. This month, first graders put pencil to paper to reach out to someone who made their kindergarten year special—the seniors they were paired with last year, now navigating their first year of college.

The Christmas letter-writing project served multiple purposes beyond staying in touch. Students honed essential skills in letter composition and penmanship while learning to express themselves thoughtfully on paper. They also practiced perspective-taking, considering what life might be like for their buddies—some now studying far from home—as they adjust to college life.

The exercise cultivates empathy and demonstrates genuine care for another person’s experience, teaching first graders that meaningful relationships require intentional effort to maintain. These heartfelt letters arriving this week will remind college freshmen that they’re remembered and valued by the young students they once mentored.

Here is a look back at some of the pairings during the 2024 seniors’ final chapel and the letters the college freshmen will receive this week from their buddies.
