Cancer Kids First Club Receives National Recognition

Jackson Academy’s Cancer Kids First Club was recognized last week by the organization’s national board for club members’ impact and dedication in 2025. The club placed in the top 15 out of 100 clubs nationwide.

The national board reflects on each chapter’s membership growth and impact on pediatric cancer patients illustrated through activities, events, fundraisers, and donations to local cancer centers. Since JA’s club was established in August 2025, students have donated more than 100 toys to the Children’s of Mississippi Hospital, raised over $350 through restaurant fundraisers, and created many encouraging Thanksgiving cards for a pediatric cancer patient in Texas.

Club members heard Dr. Laura Arnold, UMMC pediatric hematologist, speak about her experience treating pediatric cancer patients. JA faculty member, Ann Boswell Carlson, also shared her experience at St. Jude’s Hospital with the JA students.

Jackson Academy senior, Morgan Cheatham, and the Cancer Kids First club’s board are planning for upcoming events along with fresh and inspiring ideas to educate students about the effects of pediatric cancer and help raise money for the Children’s of Mississippi Hospital. The group holds its first fundraising event of the calendar year on January 24 at the Chipotle in Flowood on Market Street.
