The Honor Council, made up of students who apply for the privilege of serving in the role, works alongside Faculty Advisor Sandra McKay to administer JA’s Honor Code, the student-led backbone of a system designed to uphold the school’s values both inside and outside the classroom.
The Honor Code was born out of a collaborative effort in the fall of 2017, when a committee of students, faculty, parents, and administrators developed a formalized code for the campus. In January 2018, student leaders introduced it to the student body, who voted to adopt it. Each year, students new to the Upper School learn about the Honor Code in their English classes and sign a document affirming their personal commitment to its principles.
Council members are expected to model the ideals of integrity, respect, and excellence in everything they do, choosing to do what is right even when no one is watching. That the position requires an application reflects the seriousness with which JA students approach their roles as stewards of campus culture.
The spirit of the Honor Code has long been woven into the fabric of Jackson Academy, finding expression in community service, character education, chapel, and student-led initiatives. The Honor Council ensures that spirit remains active and student-driven, giving each new generation of JA students ownership over the values that define their school.
