Unplug to Connect with Family This Holiday Season

November 19, 2024 / All News

With holiday breaks approaching, families are preparing for downtime from school and work—and time together. The seasons when people naturally gather offer moments to make meaningful, positive memories that become the stories of our lives. Read more from Director of Apple Educational Technology Lori Snider about ways to connect with family and friends without technology this year.

This year, let’s trade screen time for family time because ‘buffering’ isn’t as fun as board games and belly laughs with the people you love the most.

To start, take a break from scrolling and start rolling—dice, cookie dough, or even your eyes at your Grandpa’s jokes!

Next, declare your house a “No-Wi-Fi Zone” (at least at dinner), where the only notifications come from your Mom telling you that dinner is ready.

If you’re still tempted by the glowing light from your iPhone screen, set your phone to “Do Not Disturb” (or throw it in a sock drawer if it’s really tempting) and dive into classic holiday fun, like watching all the Home Alone movies or playing a board game like Monopoly (though, fair warning, Monopoly might take until New Year’s).

Finally, try charging devices in another room overnight, so you wake up to family chatter instead of your iPhone’s constant rattle! After all, holiday connections should be human, not Bluetooth!

May your days be merry, your Wi-Fi weak, and your connections strong!
