Jackson Academy has been invited to partner with the University of Mississippi Medical Center in becoming a heart safe school by bringing Project Adam to campus. Project Adam is a UMMC supported project that promotes heart safety in schools, and JA is the second school in the state to begin the certification process!
School Nurse Kathy Sheffield will be provided with materials to educate students and faculty on heart safety. In combination with the educational materials, there are 14 checkpoints divided into five different categories that JA must meet to get on the map as a Project Adam certified institution. The five categories where JA must meet all checkpoints are:
- Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)
- Cardiac Emergency Response Team
- Cardiac Emergency Response Plan
- Training
- Cardiac Emergency Response Drills
There are already five defibrillators on JA’s main campus and one on JA’s north campus, and signs will be going up this week to notify students, faculty, and visitors as to where the defibrillators are located. Also, several members of JA’s staff and faculty received training in CPR from CPR Stars Mississippi recently. The training equips participants with the knowledge and skills to provide first aid, CPR, and use an AED to address sudden cardiac arrest – as well as a clear understanding of their legal protections under Good Samaritan laws.
Sheffield is a huge proponent of Project Adam. She says “I think it’s an amazing program and, if we save just one life, it will have been worth the effort it takes to be certified by Project Adam.”
JA will also be hosting a blood drive for Mississippi Blood Services on October 26 in the PAC lobby. Time slots to donate will be available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you are unsure if you are able to donate, contact Kathy Sheffield to find out your eligibility!
