Jackson Academy’s signature outdoor experiential program, SOAR, helps students develop skills known as the 6 C’s of education. These skills include critical thinking, collaboration, communication, creativity, citizenship/culture, and character/connection. Educators believe these skills are integral to preparing students for the dynamic future workplaces they will face.
At their recent outing at Timber Creek Camp, all ninth and tenth grade students and their leaders practiced these important skills including collaboration, creativity – and flexibility. Their field trip called for a day of outdoor challenges, but the entire group needed to pivot due to rain.
With leadership from SOAR Director Dean Arnold and Coach Ashley Googe, students still practiced the collaborative teamwork challenges, but in a slightly different way. “Rain did affect some things that we were supposed to do,” said Arnold, “but with the help of Coach Googe, we added some activities that these students experienced in their elementary PE days.” Students developed important skills while remembering some of their favorite games from the past.
