STEM in the Gym Reinforces Learning

May 6, 2025 / Lower School/All News

Students concentrated and cheered, gestured and jumped, teamed up and tested themselves individually as they implemented the lessons learned in Jackson Academy’s STEM classes. The second STEM in the Gym science extravaganza energized fifth graders with science, technology, engineering, and math challenges. Rotating through four stations, they put into action the knowledge and skills learned during their Lower School STEM education.

STEM Teacher Cliff Powers said that the class was larger this year, so he modified the rotation to accommodate more students. He also brought in some of his former STEM superstars, Upper School students who excelled in STEM class when they were Lower School students. These now upper-level students supervised stations, helping fifth graders understand techniques or concepts not yet in their STEM wheelhouse. Parents were also on hand to assist with stations, providing guidance and support when needed.

The Activities building time clock used for athletic contests kept time for each of the four rotations. Students enjoyed counting the remaining 10 seconds and cheering at the end of each quarter. It was a great day to hear students exhibit so much excitement about learning!
