Melissa Denson’s Upper School science class learned about the effects the environment has on memory. The students participated in a three-day lab where they practiced memory skills. The lab started as each student wrote about their first memory and discussed it within the classroom.
Denson pointed out related factors of why we remember certain details from each student’s memories. This was a great exercise for students because it demonstrated how people remember different things for different reasons.
Another aspect of the memory lab was memorizing and repeating a series of lists. Students paired up with one another to see how much they could remember. Students also had to repeat and memorize the series of words in a light and dark room. The senses play a role in how individuals remember events such as smell, eye-sight, and sounds. Denson’s class tested this theory by recalling events with their eyes closed.
