Jackson Academy senior Shelby Grant has been awarded the Jefferson Scholarship at the University of Virginia. The full-ride scholarship covers four years of undergraduate study, paid study abroad opportunities, and access to a distinguished alumni network.
Shelby’s achievement marks two historic firsts: he is the first Jefferson Scholar in Jackson Academy history and the first time in the scholarship’s history that Mississippi has produced recipients in consecutive years, according to the Jefferson Mississippi Regional Committee Chairman.
A Highly Competitive Honor
The Jefferson Scholarship represents one of the nation’s most prestigious undergraduate awards. It is valued at approximately $360,000. Based on last year’s competition cycle, which typically mirrors current numbers, approximately 3,035 students were nominated worldwide, 144 advanced to finalist status, and only 35 received scholarships. Shelby competed against the best students from across the globe to earn this distinction.
In addition to the Jefferson Scholarship, Shelby has been named an Echols Scholar at UVA, a designation reserved for the top 5 percent of the incoming class in the College of Arts and Sciences—approximately 200 students annually.
Leadership Through Service
Shelby credits much of his success in the competition to his work as founder and executive director of Education Matters Tutoring, a nonprofit organization he established to provide educational support to students in need. “I believe that was one of the biggest and most impactful activities that led me to advancing through the competition and eventually winning the scholarship,” Shelby said.
Throughout his time at Jackson Academy, Shelby has demonstrated the academic excellence, leadership, and service that define Jefferson Scholars. Shelby joins an elite network of scholars who have gone on to distinguished careers in public service, academia, medicine, law, and business. He will begin his studies in Global Public Health at UVA this fall.
