Head of School Honored with Retirement Reception

April 8, 2025 / Head of School/All News

Faculty and members of the Jackson Academy family met in the Performing Arts Center to celebrate the retirement of Head of School Palmer Kennedy on Wednesday. Current and former representatives of the Board of Trustees and the JAA shared personal stories about Kennedy’s influential guidance at JA. Among the stories told were examples of his ability to handle various situations in schools and how he brings his faith to every challenge.

Kennedy and his wife, Karen, came to JA in 2021, joining the Jackson community from Birmingham, Alabama. His 41-year career as an independent school educator includes roles as headmaster of two other schools and director of an Upper School at a third. Throughout this tenure at JA, Kennedy has dedicated his efforts to ensuring academic excellence and continuous improvement.

Kennedy recapped his season at Jackson Academy, noting the many teachers, administrators, and staff he considers among the best in education. In particular, he pointed out President Emeritus Peter Jernberg, the leader he credits with modeling the “heart” of JA. The caring, attentive spirit that was a hallmark of Jernberg’s approach to education permeates JA now. Throughout Kennedy’s original interview process, and as he led the school, Kennedy believed he shared the heart perspective that Jernberg had established.

Kennedy closed with a minute of silent prayer, encouraging the audience to pray for the school and its members. He also remarked on the importance of taking times like that to “slow this world down.”

The JAA gave the Kennedys an original piece of art created by JA alumna Avery Hederman ‘19.

Kennedy will continue to lead JA through May 31, 2025. Incoming Head of School Eddie Wettach ‘03 will move into the school’s top position on June 1. The two have been working together regularly to create a seamless leadership transition.
