It is said that centuries ago King Frederick II of Prussia referred to dogs as the best, most loyal friend a person could have. That devotion to canines was prevalent on JA’s campus Monday as fourth graders celebrated National Dog Day. Teachers created a dynamic day of learning that reinforced reading, writing, presenting, researching, drawing, and forming opinions, all in celebration of four-legged friends.
Classes read a book about dogs, then hand wrote thank you notes with drawings for four animal shelters: Cheshire Abbey, Rankin County Animal Shelter, ARF, and CARA, learning about the work the shelters perform to care for and protect animals. Students brought a photo from home and introduced their own pets to the class, telling about the funny, smart, and crazy things their own dog or other pet does. They later created cards for MARL (Mississippi Animal Rescue). Finally, the classes worked on opinion letters, where they wrote persuasively to encourage others to help care for the pets in our world.
