For more than a decade, JA sixth graders have traded their classroom desks for canoe paddles on one of the largest rivers in the world. The tradition continued as boys and girls each spent a weekend on the Lower Mississippi River near Clarksdale, Miss., through JA’s SOAR outdoor program.
The sixth-grade boys paddled the Mississippi, camped along its riverbanks and explored the outdoors together. Away from screens and schedules, the trip gave them time to strengthen friendships and share an experience they’ll talk about for years.
The sixth-grade girls set out on their own river adventure, paddling the Mississippi, camping on its banks and ending the day with s’mores around the campfire. The trip gave the girls time to connect with classmates, enjoy the outdoors and create lasting memories together.
Why the River?
Sixth grade is a big transition year, and the river trip is designed to help students start Middle School strong. On the water, students learn to work as a team, push past their comfort zones and rely on one another. Our goal for this trip is that they come home with more confidence and closer friendships!
