Students are organizing the fall retreat scheduled for November 11-13. The inspiration behind the theme of this retreat is Matthew 5:16 that encourages Christians to let their light shine. Students in grades seven through twelve may attend “Illuminate.” The retreat will take place on the JA campus with a community service activity off site. As with previous years, students will spend the night in host homes. Students are invited to take part and light up the world with God’s love.

Junior Ryder Cup Teammate Wilson Furr Draws Fans from Minnesota and Mississippi
On Sunday the United States reclaimed the Ryder Cup title. While that victory was special, the Ryder Cup now means something special for Jackson, and, especially, for Jackson Academy. JA senior, Wilson Furr, played on the winning U.S. team in the Junior Ryder Cup held prior to the Ryder Cup.
“It is such a pleasure to coach a young man like Wilson, who excels in a sport he loves and also exemplifies the qualities of good sportsmanship and camaraderie valued in the game of golf,” said Ronnie Rogers, former JA golf coach. “We couldn’t be more proud of the way Wilson represented Jackson Academy and the state of Mississippi in the Junior Ryder Cup.” JA’s team will be coached by Rob Triplett in the upcoming season, while Coach Rogers will assist with tennis.
18 Earn AP Scholar Distinctions
October 7th, 2016
The College Board Advanced Placement Program recognizes high school students who have demonstrated college-level achievement through AP courses and exams. Students can cite these distinctions among their credentials on applications and resumes.
“Students who choose to participate in the AP Program are those who are interested in a challenging course selection that requires independent work and rapid progress. With grades of 3, 4, or 5 on AP exams, a student may earn three to eight semester hours of college credit, depending on the subject, the score, and the college. JA offers 11 AP courses,” said Amy Bush, college counselor.

National Merit Semifinalists Make Time for Academics, Activities, and Service
Learning how to balance academic pursuits and activities while in high school pays dividends in college and career. Jackson Academy seniors who have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program illustrate that taking personal responsibility and challenging oneself, as well as having the support of teachers and family, are factors that help them strike a healthy balance.
Alexander Schott and Nancy Usey have been named semifinalists by the National Merit program. They are among more than a million students who took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last year as juniors. Those receiving semifinalist status make up less than one percent of high school seniors across the country. In addition to testing, students seeking finalist status must validate other qualities of excellence, involvement, and leadership through a detailed application process.
Jackson Academy’s students took a moment to reflect on their favorite class, their future plans, choosing challenging courses, and their advice to other students.
