The Jackson Academy counseling philosophy is to foster harmony between students’ academic pursuits and well-being. The responsibility of the Counseling Department is to guide students and parents toward this goal. Counselors strive to develop a strong partnership with parents and invite them to be active participants in their child’s education throughout their years at JA. It is the counselors’ goal to facilitate students’ continuous growth in intellectual, social, and emotional challenges in various stages of development.

The Upper School Counseling Department is designed to facilitate the growth and development of students as they progress through high school. These services are designed to help all students in their educational planning, senior career decision making, and personal-social development. Counselors are committed to working with parents as well as with students themselves to help students gain the greatest benefit from their school experience. In addition, the Upper School counselors work closely with:

  • The administration and interpretation of the PLAN and PSAT tests
  • All students in scheduling and course selection advisement, explaining graduation requirements, College Prep, Honors, and Advanced Placement classes, emphasizing the importance of grade point average
  • Consulting with students individually and in small groups, interventions, and referrals to outside professionals
  • Coordinating parent/teacher conferences
  • Equipping and maintaining Counseling Department with library books and community resource information
  • Individual admissions testing
  • Inviting special topic speakers to campus
  • Organizing and planning ACT and PSAT workshops
  • Parents and students in individual conferences
