Character Education on the Mississippi River

The first fifth grade overnight trip on the Mississippi River was an exciting, character-shaping adventure for 21 fifth graders and seven chaperones. Perfect weather contributed to a wonderul outing that helped students escape their comfort zones and build confidence in unfamiliar surroundings. Participants canoed, swam, explored sandbars and gravelbars, took nature hikes, and camped out on a sandbar on Buck Island. The fifth graders created some great memories. It was Quapaw Canoe Company’s first overnight trip with students from a Mississippi school.

2014 Homecoming Features Student, Alumni, and Community Activities

Jackson Academy will celebrate Homecoming 2014 with a host of activities centered on the theme “Around the World.” In addition to great football action set to begin at 7:00 p.m. when JA takes on Pillow Academy, there will be presentation of the Homecoming Court and activities that remind everyone to be mindful of and responsive to needs in their communities. Activities for Friday and Saturday include the following:

Friday Activities

• Pep Rally on the football field at 9:30 a.m.

• Special friends from the Mustard Seed will join JA students at the Pep Rally.
• A presentation for the school-wide food drive to benefit the Animal Rescue Fund will occur at the Pep Rally. Individuals may bring pet food to contribute.

Lunch to Lead

GroupLunch to Lead is a new opportunity at Jackson Academy for Upper School students. Community members share information about their occupation, community service, and other topics.  Dr. Mike McMullan was the first speaker and addressed interested students during an extended lunch break.  He discussed his career as an interventional cardiologist and offered tips for becoming a successful leader.

Dr. Alan Jones from UMMC Speaks to Coaches

Dr. Alan Jones, UMMC professor and chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine, spoke to coaches at JA on last Tuesday about the latest information available on hydration.   UMMC is reaching out to coaches to provide information for athletes taking part in athletic or exercise-intensive events.
