JA Tennis Tryouts Coming Soon

All interested boys and girls in grades six through twelve are invited to come and tryout for the JA team!  The team practices and competes in the spring from February to early May.  It is  comprised of 14 boys and 14 girls with a few alternates for each.  Since JA is a busy campus with many activities, the coaches are offering six times that students can come and hit, play games, and show the coaches their skills.  Students may come to one tryout or all six depending on what their schedules allow.  All tryouts will be held at the Northeast Courthouse, and everyone should bring their own racquet and water.  If the coaches feel  that a playoff is necessary to determine a spot, it will be scheduled separately with the individuals involved.  Please email Coach Roberts if you plan to tryout at croberts@jacksonacademy.org.
Tryout times for this season will be:
Mon.  September 8   3:30-4:30
Tues. September 9   7:30-8:30 pm
Wed.  September 10 3:30-4:30  and 7:30-8:30 pm
Wed.  September 17 3:30-4:30 and 7:30-8:30 pm
If you have questions, please feel free to contact the coaches.

JA Fast Pitch Softball vs Pillow Recap

Pillow Academy (16-4), ranked #5, visited Raider Park to take on Jackson Academy in conference play on Tuesday.  Pillow’s senior pitcher held the Lady Raiders to just one hit (Tyler Pitts) and removed JA from the plate seven times via strike out while only putting a Lady Raider on base on balls just once.
JA struggled at the plate and on defense as well, logging 10 errors in the contest.  It was a dual effort in the circle once again.  Columbia Holeman faced 18 batters and Ashton Berry saw 20.  They combined for 3 strike outs and just 2 earned runs on 11 hits.  Berry was able to get to the batters early landing 65% first pitch strikes and, overall, throwing 63% strikes.  With a lack of offense and inability to keep Pillow from crossing the plate, JA loses 12-0.

JA Fast Pitch Softball vs Hartfield Academy Recap

softballsoftballLady Raider Softball visited Hartfield Academy in their second meeting of the 2014 season. It was a quiet, somber win for the Lady Raiders as news of the passing of Jackson Prep’s Walker Wilbanks reached players right before game time just after the players had circled up to pray for Walker.

The Lady Raiders donned Prep Patriot red and blue ribbons in their hair to honor Walker, the Wilbanks family, and the extended Prep family.

During play, JA logged only one error, while Columbia Holeman put away nearly half of the Lady Hawks’ at bats with strike outs. Allowing just one hit, JA also allowed only one earned run, giving the Lady Hawks’ their only run.

On offense, JA was removed from the batter’s box by striking out in a single instance. 7 hits, 6 RBIs and 10 runs defined the Lady Raider offensive effort which included making contact at the plate on 95% of their plate appearances. Delaney Wallace, Robyn Hadden, Kathryn Butler, Ashton Berry, Holeman (stand up double), Lily Crawford, and McKinna Powell each scored a hit a piece. Mary Lindley Tharp, Berry, Hadden and Butler each had 1 RBI, while Powell had 2 RBIs. The Lady Raiders took this contest 10-1.

Raiders Begin Season with Win in Meridian

G-Stewart-Score-vs-NEL

Greg Stewart’s 38yd TD Reception

Jackson Academy defeated Northeast Lauderdale 16-12 last night in Meridian. In a rather sloppy contest, the Raiders were able to overcome three turnovers and a huge gap in the Time of Possession battle as the JA Defense rose to the occasion in the fourth quarter to stop the Trojans from reclaiming the lead in a back-and-forth second half.

Wyatt Powell carried the load for JA as he fininshed with 92 yards on 12 carries and his first varsity Touchdown.

Defensively, six Raiders got into double digits in tackles: Hunter Berry (16), Wes Crockett (15), Gavin Funderburg (14), K.C. Lucious (14), Luke Ross (14), and Kent McNamara (10). The Raider defense also collected three big sacks, included in their total of 12 1/2 tackles for loss in the game for a total of 44 yards lost. They limited the Trojans to 4-of-17 on third down conversions.

The Raider Special Team unit was just that, special. They collected 6 returns for a total of 143 yards, capped off by Davis Simmons‘ 76 yard Punt Return down to the 1-yard-line which set up Powell’s go-ahead score in the 4th quarter.

The Raiders will take on St. Georges Independent School out of Memphis on Friday, August 29th in their Home Opener at The Brickyard. Kickoff is at 7:00pm. The Countdown to Kickoff Pregame Show will start at 6:00pm on SuperSport 930.
