Wednesday at Belhaven University the Lady Raiders successfully defended their state title during an all-day MAIS volleyball tournament. Their teamwork solidified a three-peat title for the volleyball team, and the first JA state title for incoming volleyball coach Christina Lawrence. Assistant coach is Jennifer Bracken. The Lady Raiders completed the season with a 25-8 record.
In the state tournament, JA won its quarterfinal match over Hillcrest, its semifinal match over Jackson Prep, and it final match over PCS, not losing a set en route to the state title.
Junior Ryder Cup Teammate Wilson Furr Draws Fans from Minnesota and Mississippi
On Sunday the United States reclaimed the Ryder Cup title. While that victory was special, the Ryder Cup now means something special for Jackson, and, especially, for Jackson Academy. JA senior, Wilson Furr, played on the winning U.S. team in the Junior Ryder Cup held prior to the Ryder Cup.
“It is such a pleasure to coach a young man like Wilson, who excels in a sport he loves and also exemplifies the qualities of good sportsmanship and camaraderie valued in the game of golf,” said Ronnie Rogers, former JA golf coach. “We couldn’t be more proud of the way Wilson represented Jackson Academy and the state of Mississippi in the Junior Ryder Cup.” JA’s team will be coached by Rob Triplett in the upcoming season, while Coach Rogers will assist with tennis.
Recognizing his baseball career spanning high school, college, and professional competition as well as coaching, a selection committee representing all aspects of Mississippi sports has named Jay Powell a 2017 Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame inductee. The official induction ceremony is Saturday, August 15, 2017, at the Jackson Convention Complex.
Powell joined the JA coaching staff in 2005 and is entering his tenth season as head coach of the JA Raiders baseball team. He led the Raiders to a state MAIS title in 2011, prompting the Mississippi Legislature to honor the team with a resolution for an extraordinary season.
